Jordan's Principle

Jordan’s Principle ensures that all KI children and youth have access to the health, social, and educational services they need—without delay. In Kitchenuhmaykoosib Inninuwug, Jordan’s Principle is delivered through several community-based programs that support the mental, emotional, physical, and cultural wellbeing of young people.

Programs under Jordan’s Principle:

Choose Life Program

The Choose Life Program offers culturally grounded support and activities for KI youth and community members. It focuses on suicide prevention and overall mental wellness through three key streams:

  • Land-Based Program: Youth and families are taken out on fishing and hunting trips and seasonal camps, providing opportunities to reconnect with nature, culture, and identity. These experiences foster self-worth, strengthen cultural roots, and provide food through wild game harvesting for families in need. The program works closely with knowledge keepers who pass on traditional land-based skills.

  • Outreach Program: Through physical activity and gym participation, youth stay active and engaged. The program promotes mental wellness by reducing stress and anxiety, improving mood and sleep, and building self-esteem.

  • Youth Centre: The centre offers workshops and skill-building sessions that empower youth to explore who they are, develop self-regulation, and gain confidence. Activities are delivered in partnership with the SBE group, using experiential learning to support personal growth.

Safe House

The Safe House provides a secure, temporary home for youth experiencing homelessness, abuse, or crisis. It offers emergency shelter, counseling, life skills training, job preparation, access to healthcare, and connection to support services. Experienced staff work closely with youth to help them heal, rebuild, and work toward independence in a stable, nurturing environment.

Special Needs Program

This program supports children and youth in KI with special needs by ensuring they receive the care, resources, and tailored services necessary for their growth and development. Services may include assessments, learning supports, medical care, and other individualized resources.

Allied Services

The Allied Program provides children and youth in KI with access to professional counseling and therapy services to address mental health and emotional wellbeing. This support is vital in helping young people process trauma, develop coping skills, and build resilience.
